Artist's Comments

Inspired by a paragraph of Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente.

And what do they make in this factory? Why, the vermin of Palimpsest. There is a machine for stamping cockroaches with glistening green carapaces, their maker’s mark hidden cleverly under the left wing. There is a machine for shaping and pounding rats, soft grey fur stiff and shining when they are first released. There is another mold for squirrels, one for chipmunks and one for plain mice. There is a centrifuge for spiders, a lizard-pour, a delicate and ancient machine which turns out flies and mosquitoes by turn, so exquisite, so perfect that they seem to be made of nothing but copper wire, spun sugar, and light.

Had this drawing sitting on my desk for ages and I scanned and prettied up today. I would be grateful for critiques and suggestions of how this image could be improved, especially in terms of texture and light. <3

In the meantime, I fight armor and water in Photoshop. :D

If you find that me talking to myself is strange, then you'll get a pleasant surprise when the voices start talking back.

niiiiice job! The details are fantastic, especially on the scales (is it scales?).

I have nothing to say concerning lights and textures; I really like it like it is!

Okay, now I have time to talk of lights and textures.

I like the way the feathers get more blurred in the creatures, from near to far. But the light & shadows, of backs and sides, the value stay the same. So the individual creature looks well rounded, but the whole array of them is flat. That might be intentional: the cockroach orb is strangely flat, too.

I like the tangle of wires below the creatures and behind the cockroach orb, and that there's a different background in the middle: the block with holes, the other machinery. I like the lettering, nice touch! and the oversized screw heads. But I want another tangle of wires at the lower right and instead I get a flat lightness with no details at all.

There is smoke (is it?) on the right, too, but it's not interacting with the beams of light. Those seem to be close, the smoke farther away. And if those are supposed to be flames coming from the back of the machine, they look more like fronds and flower petals. It's one thing to have the right side generally lighter than the left, but it needs at least some small deeper bits of contrast to balance?

My eye gets stuck in the patch of blankness, because there's so much detail in other areas that it assumes I ought to be seeing something there that I'm not.

Wow! That is soooo beautiful! I just love the little beasty things, they have such cute expressions. :+fav:
